More than two decades ago, the City Hall, the Junta de Andalucía and the Government created a special commissioner, with his own office, and a comprehensive plan to try to transform the socio-economic reality of this neighborhood, marked by the social exclusion and crime.

To “solve the problem” in Polígono Sur, where the Three Thousand Homes or the Reina de los Ángeles slum are located, the mayor of Seville announced a few weeks ago that he would benefit from the advice of “international specialists” experienced in the conflict neighborhood of the Bronx of New York in order to respond to a “strategic project of social, urban, environmental and architectural improvement”.

The municipal council also focused on El Vacie, a slum that has existed for almost a century in the northern part of the city and where 180 people belonging to 32 families still live, according to the last municipal census of May 2024. The dismantling of this “ghetto”, as the mayor defined it, is the responsibility of Social Services technicians and the objective is for it to be carried out before the end of his mandate -2027-.
