The oath rules are regulated in the Vatican law.
Pope John Paul II established the regulation of the pope’s selection in the 1996 document, which was still valid, although Pope Benedict XVI revised him twice before resigning in 2013.
Benedict tightened the oath of confidentiality, saying that anyone who has leaked in the secrets of the conclave will encounter automatic excommunication.
