At least 19 miners have died and 33 others were trapped following an explosion at a mine in eastern Iran, Iranian media reported on Sunday.

The explosion occurred last night due to the release of methane gas in one of the tunnels of a mine in the city of Tabas in the southern province of Khorasan, the director general of the provincial government’s crisis management body, Mohammad Ali Akhundi, said, according to state news agency IRNA.

“The death toll from the Tabas mine accident is 19,” Akhundi said.
