It has been 30 years since the authoritiess, led by the Ministry of Culture, former president, José Bonorepresentatives of the Provincial Council and the City Hall of Cuenca, led by the former mayor, Andrés López Moya, gathered to sign the agreement that would erect in Cuenca, the fourth auditorium that would allow the city of Hanging Houses to have another dimension on the cultural and musical level in Spain.
Queen Sofiaaccompanied by José Bono, the Minister of Culture, Carmen Alborch, and other personalities, inaugurated the Cuenca Theater-Auditorium with a concert performing pieces by Rinsky, Falla and Bartokby the National Youth Orchestra of Spain (which has its headquarters in this building), under the direction of Edmon Colomer. Since then, it has hosted performances by hundreds of national and international artists.
Origins
After signing the agreement, the Cuenca City Council set to work to find the best location for this infrastructure, among which the quarry, located at the foot of Cerro del Socorro, was not excluded, next to the Huécar river and facing the old town. It is a controversial decision, which is not exempt from rejection by the “purists” who came to this place “as a total absurdity”, according to the official chronicler of Cuenca, Miguel Romero.
The building, with a modern structure and design, is the work of architects José María García de Paredes and Ignacio García Pedrosa, It has a wide staircase which leads to a large panoramic square.. A bright canopy precedes the glass entrance, behind which the spacious and bright foyers open. He also has two bedrooms whose distribution and design allow it to host music, dance and theater shows.
The Cuenca Auditorium was built on the slope of the Hoz del Huécar
At the end of 1993, the construction work carried out by the company Covers and MZOV, SA (now Acciona) was completed. In the months preceding the opening, numerous meetings were held with the participation of representatives of the institutions involved in the work, the company and local authorities to fill the large building with contents and furnish it. He The Cuenca Auditorium became the fourth in Spain which was projected by Inaem and the Ministry of Culture in the National Auditorium Plan.
Tribute to Perales
Since 2021the building is named after the singer and composer, Jose Luis Peralesborn in the city and chaired by the grateful and very excited artist.
An emotion that the artist evoked when talking about his city, Cuenca, where he lived “so many years marked by happiness”and in which he enjoyed the “sunrises” he saw on his way home to Casco after a concert and which inspired him – upon seeing the Hoz del Huécar – to write several very popular songs.
This weekend the gala took place to commemorate the 30 years of the opening and more than 300 artists, a show that condensed the best of Cuenca culture with all artistic disciplines: music, theater, dance, acrobatics. Many personalities and regional, provincial and municipal authorities from Cuenca did not want to miss this celebration.
