Today is the 33rd anniversary of one of the most tragic events in the history of Azerbaijan’s independence.
Oku.Az recalls that on November 20, 1991, near the village of Garakend in the Khojavand region, another terrorist incident was committed when a Mi-8 military helicopter belonging to Azerbaijan was shot down by Armenian armed groups.
As a result of the downing of the helicopter, many Azerbaijani statesmen and journalists died.
Among the dead are State Secretary Tofig Ismayilov, Prosecutor General Ismat Gayibov, State Councilor, former Minister of the Interior Muhammad Asadov, deputies Vagif Jafarov, Vali Mammadov, Deputy Prime Minister Zulfu Hajiyev, Head of the Department of the Presidential Office, journalist Osman Mirzayev, the Minister of the Interior of Kazakhstan, deputy Sanlal Serikov, the journalist of the Azerbaijan State Television, Ali Mustafayev. In total, 22 people died as a result of the accident.
