For the first time in the country’s history, the Australian government has created a special anti-slavery commissioner. The director of the international human rights organization “Walk Free”, Chris Evans, was appointed to this position.

Australia’s first anti-slavery commissioner will begin work on December 2 and serve a five-year term, he said.
“Modern slavery encompasses many forms of human trafficking and exploitation, including practices such as forced marriages, forced labour, recruitment by deception and debt bondage. The Anti-Slavery Commissioner will lead and coordinate the government’s work to prevent this phenomenon, as well as since slavery will support its victims,” said Dreyfus.
He also noted that the Australian authorities allocated 5.3 million dollars (about 9 million manats) to the work of the new commissioner and his office.
