52-year-old man dies in house fire in Andratx

A 51-year-old Spanish man has died after a fire broke out in a rural property in Andratx. The incident took place at midday on Saturday and the man was taken by ambulance to Son Espases Hospital in Palma. He died a few hours after arriving at the hospital.

The man lived in a house located on the road that connects Andratx to the port, next to the roundabout of Son Vich. He lived as a tenant in the house, which is in very poor condition, in exchange for taking care of the farm and the animals. The fire broke out in one of the rooms and the man suffered serious burns to his face and entire body.

The man managed to escape the flames and call for help. He was first treated by a Civil Guard patrol that was nearby and alerted the emergency services. The local police of Andratx, the fire brigade and the health services went to the scene and treated the victim for half an hour to stabilise him before he was transferred to hospital in a critical condition.

The Civil Guard Judicial Police is investigating the events. Apparently the victim has a long criminal record and was alone in the house when the flames broke out.

The extinguishing efforts lasted several hours. By five o’clock in the afternoon, the flames were completely extinguished.

It was also learned that the owner of the house intended to sell it and had threatened his tenant with eviction a few days ago. According to initial police investigations, The tenant set fire to the house in revenge for the threat of eviction.
