More than a year after the start of the war, Gaza finds itself in an extreme situation. In all aspects, but now UN warns that 6% of Gaza population already faces ‘catastrophic food insecurity’.
Desperate, Gazans crowd in front of a bakery to buy bread. There is almost no flour left in Gaza, which forced many establishments to close. This is why hundreds of Palestinians wait for hours to collect their bags, although fewer and fewer people manage to do so.
“I arrived at 8 p.m. and spent the night here waiting, but I didn’t understand. My kids asked me for a loaf of bread and I can’t give it to them“, deplores Fadi Barbakh.
In Deir al-Balah, where local bakeries have closed, the price of a bag of bread exceeds $13, and in areas like Khan Younis there are fears they will not be able to continue operating due to a lack of supplies. “How will I bring food to my brothers? My mother is pregnant and my father is injured,” explains Heba Ajam.
Hunger is already so extreme this week Armed groups attacked nearly 100 humanitarian aid trucks and the UN estimates that 6% of Gaza’s population is already in phase 5, known as “catastrophic food insecurity.” A figure which could rise to 16% of Palestinians in the next 6 months.
