Economist Marseille Fratssher rightly speaks of an lost opportunity, since a higher minimum wage not only helps millions of employees, but also increases productivity, contributes to fair competitive conditions and makes the labor market more attractive. However, nothing was expected more.
Once again it was shown that the commission for minimum wages is the wrong design. Because the parity line is with three representatives each: inside the trade unions and the employer: inside it offers only one negotiations at the eye level. Unlike collective negotiations, the trade union lacks any means of pressure.
However, it does not work like that. It is best to dissolve the commission on minimum wages. Instead, the Ministry of Labor should simply be based on the European directive of the minimum wage. According to this, the minimum wage should correspond to at least 60 percent of average income in order to be considered suitable. For Germany, it would already be about 15 euros, which was promised by SPD, but not preserved.
