Puertollano to host European Union’s ‘first’ artificial intelligence data centre

Puertollano will host an artificial intelligence data center from the company Solaria Energía y Medio Ambiente. The first in the European Union, according to the company. It will be located in the old industrial facilities that Solaria owns in the mining city. This will happen after reaching an “important agreement” with the Japanese company Datasection.

The president of the Community Council, Emiliano García-Page, described the arrival of this center as “important news” for the mining city and said that it would arrive “soon.” “Puertollano will start the year with good news that further supports this important city of La Mancha as an industrial capital, today linked to new energies and the new economy,” he described.

“Frankly, this is very good news that has come to fruition. Sometimes we make a lot of efforts and they do not work, but this, fortunately, has become today an announcement that will soon be an important reality,” he assured.

Solaria announced that it has recently inaugurated its “data center” division, which is now taking “great momentum” with this new agreement. In addition, they wanted to highlight that the Japanese technology company Datasection counts among its shareholders the telecommunications company KDDI, also Japanese, or the Taiwanese “giant” of electronic components Foxconn. It is also supported by the “most advanced” GPUs of the NVIDIA brand.

The technology company will “focus” on ensuring the supply of AI processing units and servers, as well as operating and managing the AI data center and cloud that AI requires.

The agreement provides for the realization of a supply of up to 200 MW and the use of up to 100,000 m2 of surface area in Solaria’s own facilities in Puertollano. They have what are called “clean rooms”, rooms with a “high level of insulation” and air quality, which have been used for the manufacture of photovoltaic cells.

In the coming months, the “clean rooms” will house the company’s Super Micro racks and NVIDIA’s latest-generation microchips that will form the “brain” of the “European Union’s first artificial intelligence data center.”

With the construction of this center, the company wants to “replicate” the one that was created in the city of Osaka in Japan, which is the “largest in Asia” and the “first” built outside the United States and that it will be operational in the last quarter of this year.
