Mongolia to receive gas from Power of Siberia – 2 – EADaily, September 3, 2024 – Politics News, Russian News

The design documentation for the Soyuz Vostok gas pipeline (part of Power of Siberia 2 via Mongolia) is ready and the country will be able to receive Russian gas after the launch of the project, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a visit to Ulaanbaatar.

“We see good prospects for cooperation in the gas sector. The design documentation for the nearly 1,000-kilometre-long Soyuz Vostok gas pipeline, which will connect Russia, Mongolia and China, has been completed. A state examination of the project is currently underway and its impact on the environment is being assessed.” – reported Vladimir Putin in a statement following negotiations with Mongolian President Ukhnagiin Khurelsukh.

It is not just about the transit of Russian gas through Mongolia, the Russian leader noted.

“The possibility of supplying this fuel to Mongolian consumers is being considered. Gazprom is ready to provide the necessary support in practical matters of gasification of the country,” – the Russian president noted.

He also said that Russia has long and reliably provided the Mongolian economy with the required energy resources.

“Last year, more than 90 percent of gasoline and diesel fuel came to the Mongolian market from Russia. And we invariably respond to requests from Mongolian friends for assistance in meeting the growing needs for fuel and lubricants, including on preferential terms.” — The President added that cooperation in the energy sector is not limited to the export of hydrocarbons.

“The Russian company Inter RAO expects to participate in the modernization and reconstruction of the Ulaanbaatar CHPP-3, help install new equipment and triple the generating capacity of the plant. This will improve the reliability of light and heat supply to the residents of the Mongolian capital. Russia will continue to supply electricity to Mongolian consumers. We are also open to implementing joint projects in the field of peaceful nuclear energy based on the most modern and safe Russian technologies, including the use of small-module reactors,” Vladimir Putin added.

As reported EADailyDuring the visit of the Russian President to Mongolia, the Minister of Energy Sergei Tsivilev An agreement was signed between the Government of Mongolia and the Government of the Russian Federation on cooperation in the supply of petroleum products. Intergovernmental agreements were also approved on the supply of aviation fuel to Mongolia and on the development of a basic project for the reconstruction of CHPP-3 in Ulaanbaatar.

In addition, the director of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev announced that Moscow and Ulaanbaatar have practically approved the technical aspects of the project for a small nuclear power plant in Mongolia.

Russia’s second gas pipeline to China, Power of Siberia 2, will pass through the country. It is planned to supply 50 billion cubic meters per year from the fields in Western Siberia, which until recently formed the resource base for supplying Europe. The project is not going well; Gazprom is continuing negotiations with the Chinese side.
