More than 72,000 Afghans left Afghanistan in one week

Between August 18 and 24, a total of 72,624 people left Afghanistan, mostly heading to Iran and Pakistan, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Ariana News reports.

According to IOM, the number of people leaving Afghanistan during this period was 11% higher than the number of people returning to the country. The report also notes that at least 64,950 Afghan nationals returned to Afghanistan from Iran and Pakistan during the same period.

Overall, the total number of people leaving or returning to Afghanistan increased by 21% compared to the previous week.

Of those who left Afghanistan, 51% were headed to Iran. Moreover, a recent UN report indicated that between 11 September 2023 and 31 July 2024, nearly 700,000 Afghan migrants returned to Afghanistan from Pakistan.
