Fire continues against the oil tanker that was attacked by Yemen’s Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. An operation is underway to prevent the spill of approximately one million barrels of oil.
Oku.Az reports that the BBC reported on this.
The Greek-flagged oil tanker MV Sounion was abandoned off the coast of Oman by its crew after being attacked on August 21.
Experts warn that if the fire is not quickly brought under control, it risks causing the largest oil spill in history.
The US State Department has previously warned that the oil spill on the MV Sounion could be four times larger than the 1989 Exxon Valdez tanker accident off the coast of Alaska. As a result of that incident, 2,100 kilometres of coastline were contaminated.
