“In the rain, fountains of water from the roof of the classrooms…”

“Varkhankend High School in Saatli district is in a dilapidated state. The building, which is almost 70 years old, has not been thoroughly repaired over the years. The desks are worn and worm-eaten, and the lifespan of the material and technical base purchased 50 years ago has expired.”

Several parents whose children attended the school contacted Qafqazinfo with this complaint.

According to them, it is impossible to teach in the classrooms, especially when it rains, because the building is unusable:

“This school used to be one of the best in the country, but it has been in a state of disrepair for years. It looks good from the outside because it is plastered with lime, but inside it is falling apart. When students enter the classrooms from the street, the walls and roof sway, almost falling down…

The saddest thing is that, although the village has had gas for years, the school is heated by a wood stove. The stoves are not lit, the classroom is full of smoke, the students wear hats and jackets. When it rains, fountains of water come from the roof of the classrooms…”

The complainants said that although they have repeatedly appealed to the relevant authorities about the listed problems, they have not found a solution. Although two years ago it was planned to demolish and reconstruct the building of the educational institution, later the issue was removed from the agenda.

Regarding the issue, a request was made to the Mil-Mugam Regional Education Department. The department informed that major repair and restoration works are planned in the near future at the secondary school in the village of Varkhankend in Saatli district.
