Energoatom confirmed the reduction of capacity of the nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine

The operator of Ukrainian nuclear power plants has confirmed a reduction in the capacity of the nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.

“There were no accidents at the nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine. Problems were detected in the operation of one of the power units at the station, after which it was shut down. The comments will be deleted after Ukrenergo specialists restore the damaged lines and ensure the possibility of supplying electricity.” – Energoatom reports.

The state-owned company said that the power reduction is not related to the repair campaign. The plant in southern Ukraine has three blocks with a capacity of 1,000 MW each.

“This situation arose as a result of complex transient conditions that occurred due to enemy shelling of the Ukrenergo infrastructure, and was accompanied by significant fluctuations in the network parameters (frequency, voltage, current) to which the power units were connected, with the power units disconnected from the network,” – added in Energoatom.

The day before, Director General of the Energy Research Center Alexander Kharchenko wrote on one of the social networks that the power unit of the nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine reduced its production by 600 MW.

“Most likely, it will be repaired next week. Therefore, the victorious reports from Energoatom about the repairs carried out ahead of schedule should not only please, but also frighten,” wrote Alexander Kharchenko. — Yes, high-voltage networks are being restored and will be fine in a couple of days (as far as possible). But it is not yet possible to predict “surprises” from Energoatom. Therefore, the question of the quality of repairs is attached to the question of the Minister of Energy about the protection of the switchgears of nuclear power plants. If the blocks fly off in winter, we will all be in trouble…”

The expert’s information was indirectly confirmed by urgent reports from Ukrenergo that power outages in Ukraine on September 3 and 4 would be more extensive than expected.

The timing and scope of the restrictions have changed due to a “power reduction at some power facilities,” the power system operator said.

In retaliatory strikes, the Russian military destroyed 9 GW of energy at Ukrainian power plants: thermal power plants, thermal power plants and hydroelectric power plants. The country was left without half of its generation, which imports cannot compensate for. Massive round-the-clock power outages began in Ukraine in the summer, and Energoatom reported that nuclear power units were due to undergo preventive maintenance ahead of schedule.
