Severe winter weather continues to hit Spain. After devastating floods in the Valencia region in the east of the country, heavy rain hit Barcelona and its surrounding areas north of Valencia on Monday. Heavy rain caused flooding in the region and Barcelona’s international airport was temporarily closed.
Flood warnings have been issued to residents of Barcelona and its surrounding areas, especially in the south of the city. The messages urged residents to avoid narrow, deep areas, which could become dangerous areas for flooding and drowning.
El Prat airport has temporarily suspended its operations and at least 50 flights have been cancelled. Photos and videos appeared on social networks showing how the water level at the airport reaches tens of centimeters.
Emmanuel, a resident of the Barcelona area, described his experience landing at a flooded airport: “I was flying from Paris to Barcelona and realized there was a storm at the airport. The captain decided to fly and wait. An hour later we crossed the clouds and landed in pouring rain. “There was flooding in the terminal and all flights were delayed.”
Itay, a young Israeli who lives on the outskirts of Barcelona, told Channel 12: “It rained a lot from 6 in the morning until 11 in the morning, the thunder and lightning did not stop. It was impossible to leave the house: the streets were flooded. “Cities by the sea are not prepared for such situations and it is clear that neither the city authorities nor other services prepared residents for these two days.”
“This is an absolutely absurd situation,” Itay added. – This has never happened here. It is very strange that just yesterday we received a notice on our cell phones telling us to stay home. The roads in the south of Barcelona are flooded today and most public transport is out of service. The airport was flooded and a friend who was returning to Barcelona was supposed to land at 8:30 but was trapped in the air for another hour because the floods made landing impossible.”

This is how the street looked like he passed 20 minutes after deciding not to go to the university of Barcelona. How lucky and how scary at the same time, thank goodness the bus driver was waiting for me because he was late, otherwise I would have found this or even worse, take care. pic.twitter.com/CcbMbRMMc7

Spain is still recovering from the tragedy that occurred in and around Valencia, in the east of the country, where at least 217 people died. Thousands of military and police deployed in the region continue search operations and verification of the possible location of the bodies.
