Lydia Ko wins the AIG Open Major again… “A fairytale story”

Lydia Go (New Zealand), who has won consecutive Olympic gold medals and major golf championships, said: “It’s like a fairy tale.”

Lydia Ko won the AIG Women’s Open, the last major tournament of the season, which ended at the St. Andrews Old Course in Fife, Scotland, on the 25th (local time) with a final total of 7 under par 281 strokes.

Lydia Ko, who beat the players tied for second by two strokes, earned her third career major victory eight years after the ANA Inspiration in 2016. This is her 21st LPGA Tour win.

Lydia Go won the 2024 Paris Olympics earlier this month and also earned the points needed to join the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame. In about three weeks, she accomplished the feat of winning an Olympic gold medal and winning a major championship at the St. Andrews Old Course, known as the “mecca of golf.”

Lydia Go was able to achieve something that would be difficult for any top qualifier to accomplish once in their lifetime, but this was focused on the month of August 2024. She said: “The last few weeks have been incredibly crazy” and “This tournament is especially special because it was held at St. Andrews Old Course.”

“I first played here in 2013 when I was 16,” Lydia Ko said. “I’m older than I used to be, but I hope I’m a little wiser and winning at a historic venue with my family feels like a fairy tale,” she said.

“It’s hard to find words to express what has happened in the last three weeks,” he said. “Before the Olympics, I heard someone say, ‘Getting into the Hall of Fame is not the final destination, it’s like a gas station on the way to the final destination.’” he said.

He added: “After hearing those words, I thought it would be difficult to leave golf immediately after joining the Hall of Fame,” adding: “I will first concentrate on the task at hand.”
