Originally inhabited by the Bimbapes, a people of African origin with an advanced social structure, El Hierro was conquered by Jean de Bethencourt in the early 15th century during the Norman expansion. The Bimbapes offered little resistance and the island was colonized by Europeans. Land shortages and droughts led to significant emigration of the population of El Hierro to South America in the 20th century.
