Police kill gunman near Nazi History Museum and Israeli Consulate in Munich

German police are conducting a major operation in Munich after shooting dead an individual who appeared to be carrying a weapon near the Israeli consulate and the Nazi history museum in the city centre.

Police spokesman Andreas Franken, quoted by the Associated Press news agency, explained that officers had seen a person with “a long gun” around 9:00 a.m. There was a shootout and the suspect was seriously injured and later died, as confirmed by Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Hermann.

The incident took place in the Karolinenplatz district, where police deployed the device, while increasing their presence in the rest of the city, Germany’s third largest. Authorities said there was no indication of other individuals involved or other locations where attacks could be recorded.

Israeli Consul General Talya Lador thanked the Munich police for their cooperation in a message on the social network X. “This event shows how dangerous the rise of anti-Semitism is. It is important that the general public raises its voice against this,” the diplomat said.

On Thursday, the Israeli Consulate General was closed to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the attack by Palestinian militias on Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics, so the diplomatic legation staff was not working. It is not yet known whether what happened is related to the anniversary.
