Lifeguards at Palma swimming pool where child drowned are being investigated for negligent homicide

The Homicide Group of the National Police has charged two rescuers with the alleged crime of negligent homicide who had temporarily abandoned their work at the very moment when, on August 25, a six-year-old boy drowned in the swimming pool of a hotel in Playa de Palma.

The body has concluded the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the minor, who died by accidental drowning in the adult pool. As indicated by the Police, the hotel has a pool with two different areas connected to each other, each under the corresponding supervision of a lifeguard, one for the children’s area and another for adults.

The child was in the children’s area of the pool and swam to the adults-only area, where he drowned.

The efforts made it possible to determine that at the time of the incident, the two lifeguards had temporarily abandoned their surveillance posts, leaving the swimming pool unsupervised during this period, facts that the Police consider as being able to constitute the offence of manslaughter by serious negligence.

The officers informed the two rescuers of their rights as alleged perpetrators of the events and, after considering their statements as subject to investigation, they forwarded the police report to the Court that will investigate the case.
