Child drowns in unsupervised pool at Playa de Palma hotel

The National Police Homicide Unit hThe investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a child in a hotel swimming pool in Playa de Palma ended on 25 August and it was established that the minor died by accidental drowning in the adult pool.

The hotel has a swimming pool with two different areas connected to each other, each area supervised by a lifeguard, one for the children’s area and another for the adult area. The child was in the children’s area of ​​the pool and swam to the adult area, where he eventually died.

Another death in a community like The Balearic Islands have recorded a total of 75 drownings until August in the aquatic environment, 60 men and 15 women, according to provisional data collected as part of a research project on drowning promoted by the Spanish Association of Rescue Technicians (Aetsas).

According to the same data, of the total number of drownings, the death of the victim occurred in 24 cases (21 men and 3 women). By island, the majority of deaths (18) occurred in Mallorca, followed by Menorca (3) and Ibiza (3).

Throughout Spain, up to the eighth month of the year, 914 drownings were recorded, while in 406 cases the victim died.
July 2024 has also become the third month with the highest number of drownings in aquatic spaces in the last ten years – three per day -, surpassed by the same month in 2017 and 2019 with 95 deaths each year, according to data collected in the National Report on Drownings (INA), prepared by the Royal Spanish Federation of Rescue and First Aid.
