On Tuesday, November 5, American voters who had not yet voted by mail or in advance had to go to the polls to decide between the two main candidates: Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump.

In this indirect universal suffrage vote, Americans vote for 538 electors, who designate the president. To win the election, a candidate must obtain an absolute majority, that is, obtain the votes of 270 voters or more. Our map below colors the states based on reliable estimates reported by the Associated Press, which is the reference.

The American states are then classified according to the number of voters they have but also according to their tendency to vote more for one of the two sides, or if they are undecided, according to the Cook political report, a publication that refers in non-Partisan monitoring of the elections in the United States.

States are ranked by the number of voters they have and are ranked by whether they tend to vote more for one of the two sides, or whether they are undecided (source: Cook Political Report).

* The states of Maine (four electors) and Nebraska (five electors) appear several times because they assign their electors according to legislative districts, and not simply according to which candidate arrives first.
