In Tuesday’s elections, the Republican Party wrested control of the US Senate from Democrats after four years in opposition.
Republicans took control of the Senate with victories in West Virginia and Ohio.guaranteeing that Donald Trump’s party will control at least one House of Congress next year.
Neither party appears to have a clear advantage in the battle for the House of Representatives, which Republicans currently narrowly control.
But Tuesday’s results helped ensure that Republicans could help Trump nominate conservative judges and other members of the government if she wins the presidential race, or block much of Democrat Kamala Harris’s agenda if she wins.
Republican Jim Justice was expected to win a vacant Senate seat in West Virginia shortly after voting closed, taking over the seat previously held by Joe Manchin, a Democrat-turned-independent. In Ohio, several media outlets predicted that Republican Bernie Moreno would defeat incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown. Those two victories gave Republicans at least a 51-49 majority in the Senate, with further gains possible as the results of other competitive races become known.
Republicans also made progress in their bid to retain control of the House of Representatives, which they currently control with a narrow 220-212 majority. They managed to take three seats from Democrats in North Carolina; while Democrats won a seat in Alabama held by Republicans.
Democrats now need to flip at least six seats to take control of the 435-seat House of Representatives.
