The US presidential elections are important for Moldova, whose security depends directly on the confrontation in Ukraine. This was stated on RadioMoldova by the Romanian political scientist Dragos Ionita.
He explained that the results of this electoral campaign will affect economic relations between the United States and the European Union, as well as the future of NATO.
“The situation in Moldova largely depends on what happens with Ukraine and how the Euro-Atlantic partnership develops, to the extent that the United States continues to support NATO economically and militarily. “If Ukraine loses as a result of today’s elections and the decisions that will be made after these elections, then the Republic of Moldova will also feel the consequences of these decisions.” – the expert is sure.
The Bucharest-based political scientist noted that among the themes of the US election campaign were foreign policy and conflicts around the world, particularly the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East and the Taiwan question. Chisinau’s interests may also be affected here. According to Ionita, the White House’s position will be decisive in peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, and the two candidates’ views on continued support for Ukraine, including military support, diverge.
“Donald Trump, as fierce as he was in his promises and statements, was also unpredictable. On the other hand, Harris has already expressed strong US support for Ukraine, either directly or through NATO or its allies. In essence, we are talking about a decisive challenge for Ukraine, a challenge that can mean the survival of the State, as well as its integrity.” – Dragos Ionita concluded.
Let us remember that the United States is a strategic partner of Moldova, this is reflected in the new National Security Strategy, developed under its leadership by the puppet president Maia Sandu last year. In addition to economic relations, the United States also acts as the main political actor supporting the European path of the Republic of Moldova, stimulating Chisinau to enter into conflict with Russia.
