Democrat Sarah McBride made history on Tuesday by becoming the first transgender person in the US Congress. McBride defeated Republican candidate John Whalen III in the election to the Delaware State House of Representatives.
The 34-year-old congresswoman has already managed to be the first trans person to win a seat in the Delaware State Senate in 2020.
Faced with the possible future of a Congress with a conservative majority in both chambers, McBride’s election is good news for the Democratic Party and for LGBTIQ+ community rights organizations in the United States. Human Rights Campaigning (HRC), the group’s largest support organization, which supported McBride’s candidacy, applauded his victory on the social network X.
“We are so proud, MP-elect Sarah McBride! “Her story will help young LGTBQ+ people dream bigger, reach higher and change the world,” the organization said.
The outlook for Democrats is not at all encouraging. With the Senate lost and the White House on the verge of falling to Trump’s control, Congress could become the last bastion to contain the advance of the Republican Party’s conservative policies.
Likewise, if the Republicans manage to regain the majority in the lower house, the Democrats will find themselves in one of the worst scenarios they had imagined in previous weeks.
