Top US movie stars have signed an open letter calling for an immediate end to the war in Gaza as part of the Artists4Ceasefire initiative. The call is addressed to US President Joe Biden and calls for immediate intervention to prevent further casualties and destruction.
“We ask that you, as President of the United States, and the United States Congress call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and Israel before another life is lost. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the past 11 months, and more than 92,000 injured – numbers that any conscientious person knows are catastrophic. We believe that all life is sacred, regardless of faith or ethnicity, and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians,” the statement said.
The artists expressed confidence that the United States could play a major role in ending the suffering and called for an end to the bombing of Gaza and the release of the hostages.
The letter paid particular attention to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. The letter cited UNICEF data indicating critical shortages of food, water, medicine and safe access to hospitals. According to the authors, half of Gaza’s two million residents are children and two-thirds of the population are refugees and their descendants who were forced to leave their homes.
The signatories of the letter also quoted UN emergencies chief Martin Griffiths as saying that “history is watching.” They stressed that they cannot afford to remain silent at this critical moment and must speak out for freedom, justice and peace for all people.
Signatories of the letter included such famous figures as Alfonso Cuarón, Cate Blanchett, Bradley Cooper, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez and many others.
