The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility puts into operation the new high-speed hall of the Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station, with an area of 4,600 square meters, almost double the previous one, which will allow it to absorb the growing number of travelers and improve the user experience.
The hall was built on the new high-speed tracks, two platforms and four new tracks, which are also put into operation today, after receiving authorization from the National Railway Safety Agency (AESF). “The commissioning of this hall, as well as the tracks, represents an important step in the remodeling and transformation of this station, in which more than 540 million euros are invested through Adif,” indicated the ministry. .

The first phase of the work carried out for the overall renovation of the station and its urban environment has thus been completed. A new underpass is also in operation since this Wednesday, providing direct access to high-speed travelers via mechanical ramps, elevators and fixed stairs to Hiedra Street and the taxi rank.
Passengers can also use the lower corridor under the Cercanías tracks to exit onto Agustín de Foxá Street or connect to Cercanías, metro, VTC, car rental and parking services. On the other hand, the four new tracks allow eight to be operational for high speed, while the expansion of the hall continues, which will make it easier to maintain the current volume of trains.
Access to the new tracks is from the main hall, through covered mechanical ramps which connect to the new, wider platforms with a length of 420 meters for the simultaneous parking of several trains.
Reference node for sustainable mobility
The objective pursued by officials of the Ministry of Transport is for Chamartín to become a reference node in sustainable, multimodal and intelligent mobility. To achieve this, work has been underway for some time on the duplication of high-speed capacity, the expansion of the passenger hall and the renovation of the tracks and platforms of the Cercanías network. Once the work is completed, the entrance hall will have an area of 18,000 square meters and the station will have 25 tracks, including 13 for the conventional network and 12 for the high-speed network.
These are works that pose problems for users, but are essential to adapt the infrastructure to the expected increase in travelers, explain those responsible: if in 2023 it had 36 million travelers, it is expected that in 2030 it will reach 55 million.
