Malaga saves its Contemporary Art Center, which will reopen in 2026 under municipal management

He Contemporary Art Center (CAC) of Malaga is reinvented and will be renamed MuCACmerging with the Municipal Heritage Museum (Mupam) and expand its cultural offering. This new institution, managed directly by the City Hall, will save one of the city’s most emblematic contemporary art spaces after the completion of the work private concession next September 18th.

The new MuCAC will open in two phases: the first, in the first quarter of 2025 at the headquarters of La Coracha (Malagueta), while the old wholesale market in the Soho district, current headquarters of the CAC, will reopen its doors in 2026.

New structure

The project, presented this Friday by the mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, and the councilor for Culture, Mariana Pineda, seeks, according to the City Council, to consolidate the successful trajectory of the CAC and the Mupam through a common museological plan which integrates the two institutions under the same public management.

The MuCAC will offer a expanded permanent collection contemporary art, organizing each year around fifteen temporary exhibitions which will be aimed at Malaga and international artists, with a particular focus on Mediterranean, Latin American and African art.

Works

The restructuring of the exhibition space will involve major rehabilitation works in both locations. At La Coracha, the works have already been underway since August, with an initial budget of 1.1 million euros. The Grossistes headquarters, meanwhile, will temporarily close its doors for a renovation that will take place throughout 2025, anticipating its reopening inside first quarter 2026.

This new management model will be entirely municipal and also includes a plan to expand the artistic collection across acquisitions and donationsas well as the subrogation of the 27 employees current members of the CAC, who will be part of the staff of the Public Agency for the Management of the Birthplace of Pablo Ruiz Picasso and other museum facilities.

De la Torre and Pineda recalled that the workers of CAC Málaga are employees of the company Gestión Cultural y Comunicación SL and, therefore, the employment relationship, as in any other concession, is not maintained with the Malaga City Council but with the company that provides the service until September 18.

At this point, they explained that consultations had been carried out with labor experts and that after that, it had been decided to carry out the necessary procedures to begin the subrogation of personnel in the terms established by law – with the same conditions regarding the type of contract they originally maintain.

Current workers will have to pass selective tests in future to obtain a permanent position

This will lead to their integration into the staff of the public body as permanent non-permanent staff and will be followed, later, when the staffing needs of the new equipment are determined, by the carrying out of a public call so that these places be transformed into fixed in accordance with the corresponding selective procedures and in compliance with the principles of equality, merit and capacity for access to the public sector. This means that these workers They will have to pass the selective tests who are summoned at that time.

On the other hand, the city council will also organize a public competition to elect the new artistic director of MuCAC.
