Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that during the month of fighting in the Kursk region, Russian troops lost around 6,000 soldiers killed and wounded. In addition, hundreds of Russian soldiers were captured by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
He made this statement during a meeting of the Ukrainian Defense Contact Group (Ramstein-24) held at an air base in Germany.
Zelensky noted that the operation of the Ukrainian Defence Forces in the Kursk region has already been going on for a month. According to him, this Russian border territory served as a springboard for a possible new offensive on Sumy, which was being prepared by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. However, thanks to a successful counteroffensive, Ukrainian troops moved the fighting into Russian territory.
“Today we control more than 1,300 square kilometers in the Kursk region, including 100 settlements. Russian troops abandoned many of these territories, essentially fleeing when Ukrainian forces approached. However, a significant part was liberated as a result of military operations. Within a month of the operation in the Kursk region, the Russian army lost about 6,000 soldiers killed and wounded,” Zelensky stressed.
The President also stated that thanks to the successful actions of the Ukrainian Defence Forces, Russian troops no longer pose a threat of a new attack on Sumy.
It should be noted that the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) previously stated that the operation in the Kursk region has an impact on the entire front and long-term consequences for Russia.
