A Delta Airlines flight en route from Boston, Massachusetts, to Rome, Italy, was forced to make an emergency landing at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport due to a rare medical incident involving one of the passengers.
The incident occurred last Friday evening. The Airbus A330, with 281 passengers on board, took off from Boston’s Logan International Airport. About an hour into the flight over the Atlantic Ocean, it was reported that one of the passengers had suffered a “severe attack of diarrhea.” Due to the seriousness of the situation, the crew decided to divert the aircraft and make an emergency landing in New York.
After landing, all passengers were evacuated and transferred to another plane bound for Rome.
Delta Airlines apologized for the inconvenience caused to passengers and thanked them for their cooperation. A spokesperson for the airline confirmed that the incident was due to a “serious medical issue” for one of the passengers, but declined to provide further details about his identity or health status. There were unverified reports on social media that the passenger’s bouts of diarrhea were affecting others.
Incidents like this involving flight cancellations for medical reasons are not uncommon, but cases involving severe diarrhea are rare. Delta Airlines announced that it is thoroughly investigating the incident to prevent similar situations in the future. The affected aircraft was returned to service approximately 20 hours later after being thoroughly disinfected.
