Liputan6.com, jakarta – The speaker of the Indonesian parliament Puan Maharani emphasized the importance of maintaining the balance between law enforcement agencies and protecting the constitutional rights of citizens. This statement was transmitted by Poan in response to cooperation between the Prosecutor General (Back) and a number of national telecommunications operators, who opened up opportunities for integrating communication data, including tapping.
“Law enforcement agencies are very important, but the prosecutor’s office should pay attention to the right to protect personal data, because private rights are constitutional rights,” Puan said in his statement on Thursday (06/26/2025).
Earlier, the Prosecutor General’s Office signed a memorandum of mutual understanding (MOU) with four large telecommunication companies in Indonesia, as well as PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia TBK, PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel), PT IndoSAT TBK and PT XLSMART Telecom Sejahtera TBK This cooperation includes the use of communication data for law enforcement agencies.
Reconnaissance Prosecutor General Red Mantovani explained that cooperation included the exchange and use of information, including the installation and operation of devices for tapping and providing communication recording.
He argued that this cooperation corresponded to the mandate of Law No. 11/2021, which is a change in Law No. 16/2004 in relation to the prosecutor’s office.
Nevertheless, Puan recalled that an increase in the ability of law enforcement agencies using technologies should continue to work in the corridor of the law and respect the principles of democracy.
“Strong law enforcement agencies should grow side by side with respect to citizens’ rights,” Puan said.
