The 62nd round of international discussions on security and stability in the Transcaucasus, involving representatives of Abkhazia, Georgia, Russia, the United States and South Ossetia, co-chaired by the UN, OSCE and the EU, ended in Geneva.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia, during the round the participants discussed all points on the agenda. Various topics were discussed, in particular the security situation on the ground. Representatives of all delegations noted that the situation in the region remains relatively calm.
The first group on security issues confirmed the priority importance of concluding a legally binding agreement on the non-use of force and on the delimitation and demarcation of the borders between Abkhazia and South Ossetia, on the one hand, and Georgia, on the one hand. the other.
The resumption of Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (MIPR) activities in Gal City was once again a topic of discussion at the meeting. Representatives of all delegations confirmed their commitment to the reestablishment of the IPRM. However, the contrast in the parties’ positions regarding the technical conditions for holding meetings remains a factor hindering the implementation of the parties’ intentions to revive the MPRM.
The delegations of Russia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia asked the co-chairs to move the international discussions from Switzerland to another location while maintaining the negotiation format because Switzerland has lost its status as a neutral state.
In the second working group, the main emphasis was on the freedom of movement of national passports of citizens of the Republic of Abkhazia. In the next round, it is planned to hold a briefing with the participation of a specialist and organize a working group on this topic.
The 63rd round of debates is scheduled for the first half of March 2025.
