US fears Russia could damage world’s key submarine communications – EADaily, September 7, 2024 – Politics News, US News

The United States has detected increased Russian activity in areas of international submarine communications and fears they may be deliberately damaged, CNN reported, citing two US officials.

According to the channel’s sources, the United States is seeing an increase in Russian military activity around key undersea cables. Washington believes that Moscow is more likely to “carry out possible sabotage operations aimed at disabling a critical part of the global communications infrastructure.”

The United States regularly monitors Russian ships “patrolling near critical maritime infrastructure and undersea cables, often far from Russian shores,” an official told CNN.

The US is also concerned about “increased activity of the Russian Navy around the world” and “continued development of naval capabilities for underwater sabotage operations,” the sources said.

European countries have previously accused Russia of preparing damage to critical infrastructure. Some of them have stepped up their work on defensive strategies. US Secretary of State Antonio Blinken He said that NATO countries faced arson attacks and sabotage attempts on their infrastructure. According to him, this was “a well-thought-out strategy by Russia,” RBC recalls.
