Massive Russian attack on Ukraine kills five, leaves part of kyiv without electricity or water

A major missile and drone attack launched by Russia on Monday across Ukraine has killed at least five people, according to authorities. One Ukrainian civilian died in Lutsk, in the northwest of the country, and two others lost their lives in the Dnipropetrovsk regions (central) and Zaporizhia (southeast). The attack had the electricity sector among its targets.

In a video address on Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the attack as “one of the largest combined attacks” against Ukraine during the war. “More than a hundred missiles of different types and a hundred Shahed drones,” he said. “And like most previous Russian attacks, it targeted critical civilian infrastructure.”

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that 15 regions of the country were hit by Russian attacks on Monday morning. Shmyhal asked his allies for long-range weapons and permission to attack Russian targets.

“As a result of the enemy attack, infrastructure in Lutsk was damaged. So far, we have information about one death,” the city’s mayor, Igor Polishchuk, wrote on his Telegram account, having previously reported damage to a residential building.

In Dnipropetrovsk, a 69-year-old man died in the attack, according to the region’s governor, Sergei Lisak.

For his part, the head of the military administration of Zaporozhye, Ivan Fedorov, reported the death of one person in the region.

According to several official spokespeople, the massive attack launched by Russia in the early hours of Monday morning was largely directed against Ukraine’s energy sector.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klichkó reported power and water outages in some parts of the capital. Many residents of the capital took refuge in metro stations to escape the attack.

Electricity companies have announced emergency power cuts following the attack.
