a difficult period marked by cancer, misfortune and chaos

September 8th is and always will be a date marked in red on the Windsor calendar. A day like this, but in 2022, Queen Elizabeth II has died and, automatically, her son Carlos (75 years old) has become the new British monarch. A transitional stage that ends this Sunday second anniversarymarked by a succession of misfortunes and in turn, a major collapse in Buckingham.

His first year as monarch was a difficult one. Overcoming controversy, winning the affection of the British people and rethinking a new monarchy. But it was a bitter and particularly turbulent.

On January 17, we learned, an hour and a half later, that Kate Middleton (42) was recovering in hospital from abdominal surgery and that the following week King Charles would undergo surgery for an enlarged prostate. On February 5, Buckingham announced that the sovereign had been diagnosed with cancer and, for this reason, he had to restructure his schedule and follow a treatment that he still continues today.

The first weeks after the diagnosis, the monarch stayed away from any public engagement and supported his entourage. However, both the restructuring of the agenda and the alternation of functions were not easy.

Normally, in a situation like this, William (42), heir to the Crown, would take over the work of the King. But this could not be the case, at least one hundred percent, because the Prince was dedicated to the health of his wife, who also has cancer. Although she has fulfilled part of the agenda, her commitments, especially in the first months of the year, have been considerably reduced.

In recent times, Carlos III has relied on his wife, Camille (76). However, it should be recalled that the Queen also decided to put her schedule on hold for a while because she was exhausted. This happened last March, after his brother-in-law Eduardo did the same. A month earlier, in the midst of the debacle at Buckingham, the younger brother of the sovereign had announced “a brief respite from his obligations.”

So the one who became the King’s great staff was his sister, the princess anne (74). But in late June, against her will, she also had to take a break from her schedule. The only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II was hospitalized after suffering a spectacular accident with a horse that caused minor injuries and concussion. From that time until August 29th last, when he returned to public life, he was dismissed from his functions of the Crown.

Although everyone has returned to their schedule of engagements with some regularity, with the exception of Kate Middleton – who has only been seen at Trooping The Colour and the Wimbledon men’s final – it has been a season marked by uncertainty in which Carlos III has remained, for a time, without their “heavyweights”.

A problem revealed the consequences of a reduced monarchyone of Charles III’s most controversial projects after he became king and for which he was questioned early in his reign as monarch.

Death

Amid so much chaos and disaster, the Windsors also had to deal with the grief of two deaths. In February, just 20 days after the king’s diagnosis was known, he died Thomas Kingston, husband of Lady Gabriella Windsor, niece of Queen Elizabeth II. He lost his life at the age of 45, due to a “head trauma“.

Kingston was found dead in his family’s singing mansion and, according to the Daily MailA gun was found near his body in an outbuilding at his parents’ property in the Cotswolds.

A few weeks later, on March 6, Charles III received more heartbreaking news: the death of his close friend Ian Farquharwho also served the royal family for years. He was part of one of the British Army’s cavalry regiments and later became equerry to Elizabeth II, with whom he also had a very close relationship.

Carlos’s evolution

During these months, little information has been published about Carlos III’s illness. In fact, the type of cancer he has is not known. But this week, at a public event, Queen Camilla revealed that her husband is progressing favourably.

Last Tuesday, September 3, during her visit to the new Dyson Cancer Center of the British Public Health Service (NHS), a social worker asked the husband about the progress of the king in his treatment against cancer. To the question “Is he (Carlos III) well?”, Camila replied: “Yes, he is doing very well“.
