Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia left Venezuela thanks to the intervention of the Spanish government, which announced on Sunday that it would welcome the Venezuelan opposition into the country. An exile that has already allowed González Urrutia to leave Caracas on board a Spanish Air Force plane.
“Edmundo González took off from Caracas for Spain on a Spanish Air Force plane. The government of Spain has put in place the necessary diplomatic and material means for his transfer, carried out at his request,” the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs published in a statement.
Jose Manuel AlbaresMinister of Foreign Affairs, did the same and reaffirmed this information in his personal account, where reiterated the “commitment” of the Spanish authorities “with the political rights and physical integrity of all Venezuelans.”
Earlier, Venezuela’s executive vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced that González Urrutia had left the country with safe passage “for the sake of tranquility and political peace.”
“Today, September 7, the opponent Edmundo González Urrutia left the country, having voluntarily taken refuge in the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas For several days, he has been asking for political asylum from this government,” he declared on his Instagram account.
The Venezuelan authorities granted safe conduct to the opponent after maintaining the “relevant contacts” with the Spanish government and, “once the extremes of the case had been crossed and in accordance with international legality”, the “due” safe conduct was granted to the opponent to be able to leave the diplomatic headquarters and travel to Spanish territory.
The Venezuelan representative maintained that this action “reaffirms the respect” of the Venezuelan authorities “for international law.”
