After US President Joe Biden withdrew from the election race, turning his attention to foreign policy, in particular the war in the Gaza Strip, the situation began to develop more intensely.
This is according to a CNN analysis article dated September 7, written by Stephen Collinson, who cites sources in the White House. According to him, Biden’s circle notes that the president is obsessed with this issue.
The White House is determined to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza before the elections and the administration is convinced that 90 percent of all obstacles have already been removed; however, 14 of the 18 sections of the agreement have been agreed in Israel. As already noted, they do not share Washington’s confidence in immediate success.
One reason, Collinson said, is Biden’s desire to avoid leaving a legacy of foreign policy failure for his successor Kamala Harris. This motivates the president to increase pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, although his options are limited. Biden is unlikely to take steps such as limiting arms sales to Israel, and Harris is unlikely to want to start her presidency with such measures.
Meanwhile, inside Israel, pressure is mounting on Netanyahu from military circles who want to stop the war in Gaza in order to prepare for a possible conflict in the north. However, political factors such as the influence of Itamar Ben-Gvir may weaken the effectiveness of both internal and external pressure.
