The boss of a cayuco where 170 migrants were traveling and 3 people died was arrested

National Police officers arrested a Senegalese citizen as the alleged perpetrator of the crimes of homicide for recklessness and against the rights of foreign citizens, by captaining a boat in which 170 migrants traveled in inhumane conditions and three people died.

The events took place at the end of last August when a cayuco-type boat, coming from the African continent, was rescued by Salvamento Marítimo near the coast of El Hierro and towed to the island.

Inside, they traveled in precarious conditions, without security measures and with little food and drink, more than 170 people of sub-Saharan origin, with two people dead on board and one died during the crossing.

The Provincial Brigade of Immigration and Borders of the Provincial Police Station of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria took charge of the investigation into the events. As a result of the investigation carried out, it was possible to identify five people as responsible for the management and direction of the boat in which the crossing took place, and four of them were arrested at the beginning of September.

However, the fifth person identified, who would be the leader of the boat’s crew and responsible for loading migrants onto the beach before boarding, it was not possible to stop it at that time. A search, detention and presentation order was issued, which was notified to the Local Immigration and Borders Brigade of the Vigo Police Station, which detected it last October in the Vigo metropolitan area .

On October 24, he was arrested and placed at the disposal of the competent judicial authority, which ordered his immediate incarceration.

The cayuco was initially spotted by the sailboat Cap’tain Kirk around 9 a.m. but it was lost from sight, so Maritime Rescue warned the fishing boats fishing in the area, and one of them took it found.

After the rescue, the migrants were disembarked shortly before 1 p.m. at the port of La Restinga where they were treated by the health services.
