Before winter comes, change your car’s engine oil – The expert talked about the reasons

As the temperature drops, the oil becomes thicker and stickier, making it more difficult to circulate and reducing the chances of the engine starting successfully in frost. Old oil or its low level cannot protect the engine from corrosion.

Oku.AzAs reported by “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”, automobile experts warned about this.

According to experts, changing the oil before the cold weather helps prevent starting problems and reduces the risk of premature engine failure.

Combustion and corrosion products accumulate in old or unsuitable oil, increasing the possibility of the oil solidifying at low temperatures. In severe frost, this can cause the oil to not circulate efficiently, resulting in seal damage.

The article states that changing the oil on time before the winter season increases the reliability of the car, especially in older models, which may already be subject to increased engine wear. When choosing oil for winter, attention should be paid to its viscosity (solidity). Low viscosity oil (e.g. 0W-…) is more suitable for cold climates because it maintains its fluidity and reaches the engine parts quickly during start-up. Oils with higher viscosity (e.g. 10W-…; 15W-…) may be too thick, which increases engine wear during cold starts.

For the winter season, experts recommend using synthetic oils that better retain their properties at low temperatures. Among them, oils based on PAO (Polyalphaolefin) and GTL (Gas-to-Liquid) stand out. These oils are produced from gas and have several advantages that make them in demand among motorists.

PAO and GTL oils are less prone to oxidation, so they last longer and better protect the engine from corrosion, especially during extreme temperature changes or long drain intervals. These oils are also resistant to high slip loads, provide reliable protection of engine parts and reduce the risk of failure in active operation and icy conditions.

For cars with high mileage and engines with signs of corrosion, it is recommended to choose oils with additives that help restore seals and minimize oil leaks. These oils have properties that support and restore the elasticity of technical rubber engine parts. The additional detergent properties of these oils help combat deposits and even keep the engine running during some component wear.
