The passage of the DANA through El Ejido, west of Almería, caused considerable damage vehicles, street furniture, houses and also in horticultural crops. The size of the hail, which in some cases was almost the size of an egg, was the result of a supercell, a huge rotating storm.
El Ejido Mayor Francisco Góngora told media that the intense rains left more than 40 liters per square meter in a very short time. “This caused considerable damage to hundreds of vehicles, public roads, sports centers, farms, industrial warehouses and homes,” he said.
“This morning we are carrying out a damage assessment, trying to open roads become impassable“, reducing some basements because the damage is very important and throughout the morning we will evaluate and try to restore circulation as much as possible in many points that are hampered”, indicated Góngora.
Representatives of agricultural organizations and other administrations are visiting greenhouse crops this Tuesday morning to assess the damage. Some farms they did not resist the weight of the hailwhile most of them have damage to the plastic covers from hail impact.
Some neighbors said they had not experienced a phenomenon with these characteristics until now. Hailstorms and even small snowfalls have occurred in this area of the province, but hailstones this large have never been seen before. “Last night we were very scaredwe were in the house and I couldn’t stop crying. When it was over, we went down to the farm because how were we going to sleep without knowing what the peppers were like,” explains a neighbor from the Santa María del Águila neighborhood of El Ejido.
