More than 70% of the lake’s water comes from the transboundary Ili River, and this year at the Dobyn gauging station on the border with China, a water flow of 384 cubic meters per second was recorded, 17% more than the last year. figures.

Currently, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan is working on a draft intergovernmental agreement with China on the distribution of transboundary rivers. The objective of the agreement is to ensure a stable supply of water necessary to maintain Lake Balkhash at an optimal level.

According to the head of the department Nurzhana NurzhigitovaDuring the current year, Kazakhstan has held 28 meetings on cross-border river issues with China, Russia and Central Asian countries. The result of the negotiations was the accumulation of more than 18 billion cubic meters of water in the Kapshagai reservoir, which for the first time in the last ten years made it possible to completely fill it.
