“The government eliminates a problem for Maduro by welcoming González Urrutia without recognizing his victory”

The Vice-President of the European People’s Party, Esteban Gonzalez Ponscriticized the Spanish government for granting asylum to the Venezuelan opposition leader, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia“without recognizing him as the legitimate president.”

“This does not serve democracy, but remove a problem from the dictatorship [de Nicolás Maduro]”, González Pons said on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

As reported by EL ESPAÑOL, the diplomat Edmundo González, winner of the presidential elections in Venezuela, but not recognized by the electorate, is exiled in Spain.

He will be granted political asylum after the country’s prosecutor’s office issues an arrest warrant against him.

This Sunday, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manuel Albaresconfirmed the news on Twitter during his official trip to China.

However, the PP is not happy that this decision was adopted without Spain recognizing González Urrutia’s victory. The government of Pedro Sánchez will not do so until all electoral records are made public and verified. This is why the Spanish executive does not recognize Maduro as the winner of the Venezuelan elections either.

According to González Pons, spokesman for the PP in Congress, Miguel Telladodescribed as “petty” the “attitude” of the government that welcomed Edmundo González without recognizing him as “president-elect.”

Likewise, Tellado criticized the participation of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in the asylum operation. Regarding the former president of the socialist government, the PP spokesman stressed that he “openly defends the Venezuelan dictatorship.” “One day we will know why,” he added in a tweet.

“The government, equidistant from the terrorist regime of Maduro, is now rushing to impose itself as a defender of dignity and democracy. It claims to welcome Edmundo González Urrutia without recognizing his status as elected president and continues to accept the unworthy attitude of Zapatero,” Tellado wrote.

For her part, the deputy spokesperson of the PP in Congress, Cayetana Alvarez of Toledocriticized the fact that Pedro Sánchez’s executive “receives medals for appointing the wrong man.”

“It was not the elected president of Venezuela who should have received a bridge of money, but rather the criminal usurper,” he said, referring to Nicolas Maduro.
