Heavy rain overflows the Cadaqués stream, washing away 32 cars

Heavy torrential rains in Catalonia caused intense flooding this Friday in the town of Cadaqués (Girona). The images remind us of the DANA that devastated the Valencian Community, but fortunately it has nothing to do with it. During this flood, around thirty cars were swept away by the current. We only have to regret the material damage.

It was 3:54 a.m. when firefighters received the notice and mobilized two teams to check the vehicles involved and rule out any possibility of trapped people. After inspection, the authorities confirmed that there were no injuries or deathsand that all the towed wagons were blocked on the bridge, without risk of falling into the sea.

Furthermore, the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) issued an alert for the accumulation of intense rains in the Bajo Ampurdán, with forecasts of 100 liters per square meter. Likewise, in the absence of a specific meteorological station in the area, it is estimated that the amount of rain in Cap de Creus and its surroundings could have reached 120 liters in just a few hours.

There has already been an alert from Cecat

The city’s mayor, Pia Serinyana, explained that the maximum point intensity of this flood was “between 02:00 and 03:00” and that, At present the river continues to descend, but not as it did then.

Regarding cars, he assured that the town hall had already warned that it was parking prohibited in the neighborhood: “We received the alert that came to us from Cecat (Operational Coordination Center of Catalonia), but people parked their cars and the water took them away.”

Serinyana also said that in Cadaqués “it didn’t rain much either”, but that the heavy rain They focused on Pení, the mountain next to the municipality, which was the factor that caused the town to flood.

Criticisms of civil protection

Yes indeed, Civil defense received multiple criticisms for not issuing a rain warning, a decision they justified by the speed and intensity of the phenomenon. Given the situation, the area has been raised to the orange alert level, with precautionary recommendations for the coming days.
