Three women and a baby injured after being hit by a police car in Madrid

Three women and the baby of one of them, aged just over a year, were injured this Sunday afternoon when they were hit by a National Police car in the centre of Madrid.

One of the women was seriously injured, while the baby was admitted to hospital with a guarded prognosis. The baby’s mother and a third woman are in a less serious and light condition respectively.

The accident occurred around 4:10 p.m., at the intersection of Narváez and Alcalá streets, Madrid police and emergency services reported.

The police patrol was heading towards the area around the accident site in response to a request for support from other police officers who were trying to arrest a man who had attacked another person and was still violent. According to police sources, the patrol was driving with its acoustic and light signals on, and so the rest of the vehicles were moving away from its path.

However, one of the drivers, apparently unintentionally, crossed into the path of the patrol car and the officer behind the wheel had to abruptly change direction. The police car ended up climbing onto the sidewalk and hitting three women and one of them’s baby.

The Municipal Police opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances in which the accident occurred. For their part, the ambulance drivers of Samur-Civil Protection treated the injured. The most serious, with a foot in a catastrophic state, was a 47-year-old woman admitted to the hospital in La Paz.

The other woman, aged 34, suffered a fractured femur and multiple bruises and was taken to the 12 de Octubre hospital with a less serious prognosis, according to the Madrid Emergency Department. Her baby, aged just over a year, suffered facial trauma and head trauma. He was admitted to the Infant Jesus with a guarded prognosis while waiting to know the extent of the blow to the head.

The third woman, injured in the leg, was transferred to Gregorio Marañón in minor condition. In addition, health workers treated three other people – including the baby’s grandmother – for anxiety attacks and two of them were transferred to hospital.
