“The conflict in Sudan, which has been going on since April last year, has caused the deaths of more than 20,000 people.”
Oku.Az The Associated Press reports that this was announced by the Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
He called for an immediate ceasefire and increased international financial support for humanitarian measures.
The Director-General recalled that due to the conflict, more than 10 million people in Sudan have been forced to leave their homes inside the country, and another two million people have been forced to flee to neighbouring countries.
“The scale of the emergency, as well as the inadequacy of the measures taken to prevent conflict and respond to the suffering it brings, is shocking,” said the WHO chief.
He noted that more than half of the country’s population, some 25 million Sudanese, are currently in need of support.
“We call on the world to wake up and help Sudan to get out of the nightmare it is living through,” he stressed.
It should be noted that the situation in Sudan became tense in April 2023 due to a disagreement between the chairman of the country’s Sovereign Council and the army commander and the head of the Rapid Reaction Force. The main differences between them are related to the timing and methods of forming unified armed forces.
