On Saturday morning, August 24, in La Grande Motte, France, in front of the Beit Yaakov synagogue, two cars were set on fire, including one that was “mined” with a gas cylinder. As a result of the explosion that followed the fire, a municipal police officer was injured.

The incident in La Grande Motte occurred at 8.30am, when an unknown person set fire to two cars, one of which contained a gas cylinder. A municipal police officer was injured as a result of the arson attack that caused the explosion. Numerous police forces were mobilised to search for the offender, who managed to escape from the scene.
Four separate fires were detected. No one was in the synagogue at the time of the incident. The injured police officer was sent to hospital in Montpellier, where his condition has stabilised and he is no longer in danger of death. According to the mayor of La Grande Motte, Stéphane Rossignol, surveillance cameras recorded the suspect setting fire to cars in front of the synagogue.
The mayor of La Grande Motte and the department’s prefect, François-Xavier Losches, arrived on the scene. The latter reported that he had ordered the police to increase security at Jewish sites. The Minister of the Interior also ordered additional protection of religious buildings of the Jewish community.
