Man attacks Serbian ambassador in Madrid after asking him about his origins

Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric has called on Spanish authorities to investigate and bring to justice the perpetrator of the physical attack on its ambassador in Madrid on Sunday. The diplomat was kicked by an unknown man while she was on the street.

According to the Balkan press, Serbian ambassador to Madrid Irena Sarac was on the street near her residence and was talking on the phone in Serbian. At that moment, a young stranger approached him and asked if he was from Serbia, then kicked him in the back and ran away. The ambassador is fine, although his back is injured.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the physical attack on Ambassador Sarac in the centre of Madrid. We demand from all competent authorities a thorough investigation and accountability for this incident and this unprecedented act of violence against the highest diplomatic representative of our country,” Djuric told the Serbian news agency Tanjug on Sunday night.

Some witnesses said that judging by the attacker’s accent, he was of Albanian origin, Serbian media reported.
