Scientists at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in China have found new evidence of the existence of a huge ocean on Mars in ancient times.
Oku.Az reports that the results of the study were published by the journal “Scientific Reports.”
“China’s Zhurong spacecraft successfully landed in the southern Utopia Planitia region of Mars in May 2021. Previous studies have shown that the Hesperian Ocean may exist in the northern plains of Mars,” the article states.
According to the publication, hollow cones, polygonal depressions, characteristic water structures and ice areas were discovered, indicating the presence of an ocean.
The researchers analyzed the data collected and determined that the ocean on Mars could have been created by a flood about 3.7 billion years ago. It is also believed that the basin began to disappear about 3.4 billion years ago.
