In Afghanistan, the Taliban banned women from laughing and speaking in public

The radical Taliban group thus aims to “preserve morality” in Afghanistan and “combat vices and promote virtues.”

About this writes Associated Press.

In 2021, after taking power, the Taliban created a ministry to “promote virtues and prevent vice.” The department recently published its laws on aspects of daily life such as public transport, music, shaving and celebrations.

The 114-page document contains 35 articles and is the first official statement of laws “on vices and virtues” in the country. These laws give authorities the power to regulate Afghans’ behavior and impose punishments, including arrest.

The document states that women are required to cover their bodies in public places; clothing must not be thin, tight or short. Women are not allowed to speak in public. In addition, they are prohibited from looking at men to whom they are not related or married, and vice versa.

Let us note that this is not the first law depriving women of basic rights. Thus, in August 2021, the UN registered discriminatory decrees against women in Afghanistan. In September of that year, the country suspended secondary education for girls, despite the group promising to agree on a curriculum for women filled with the study of Islamic values and cultural norms.

In December 2022, women’s education in universities was completely stopped in the country. The UN explains that denying access to education can affect women’s physical and mental health and can also lead to domestic violence.

Earlier, Kursor reported that Russia is trying to flirt with the Taliban, for example: Putin called the group an “ally” in the fight against terrorism.
