More than six and a half million people suffer from urinary incontinence in our country. In many cases, this condition could be improved with a good pelvic floor, a set of muscles and tissues that are frequently ignored during consultations.
“In reality, in our daily lives, what we do not see, we do not pay attention to and the pelvic floor is something that we do not normally visualize. We activate it constantly throughout our lives, but unconsciously or in a secondary way,” in the words of Dr. Carmen Urbaneja Dorado, specialist in the rehabilitation department of the University Hospital of the Jiménez Díaz Foundation.
The Myth of Urinary Retention
This lack of knowledge has led to the proliferation of many myths surrounding this set of muscles and tissues, the most widespread being that stopping urination helps improve the pelvic floor.
“Holding urination will generate a high volume of urine for several hours in the bladder, which will increase the risk of suffering from a urinary tract infection,” explains Urbaneja.
In this chapter we talk about the importance of the pelvic floor and its role in our quality of life.
